The Northwest Innovation Park. Hix Rubenstein Development Company is planning to create a world class eco-industrial park on 250 acres near the Redmond Airport. In March, 3EStrategies conducted a sustainable design planning charrette for the project, pulling together two dozen key experts in topics including green building, eco-industrial design, solar, geothermal, biomass and fuel cell energy options, and sustainable landscaping; as well as business recruitment and marketing options. With what is in the plans so far, this project has a very real chance of becoming the “greenest” industrial development in the United States.

The Redmond Municipal Airport is in the process of more than tripling the size of its terminal. Carrie Novick, Airport Manager, has committed to sustainable design measures because she is determined to provide taxpayers with a facility that has the lowest operating costs possible, and because she believes Central Oregon has an opportunity to become a model sustainable economy. She says, “The Airport needs to be the portal to the local green economy.” One of the most exciting elements being planned for the new terminal is a massive solar energy array. In addition to state and federal incentive programs, 3EStrategies recently secured a $200,000 grant from PacifiCorp to help pay for the solar array.

The Millcrest Development, by Ben Hinchliffe and Jason Adams of Alterra Investments. This may turn out to be one of the very first Zero Net Energy housing developments in the state. The project will include full passive and active solar systems, qualification for the new Oregon Department of Energy High Performance Homes Initiative, advance green building practices, monitoring equipment to accurately track homes’ performance, attention to carbon emissions reductions and home owner/ operator manuals.

The Madras Aquatic Center. Due to a committed Board of Directors and 3EStrategies’ assistance, this public facility, now midway through construction, will become the most sustainably designed commercial building in Madras. Key features include passive solar design, solar hot water heating for the pools and solar radiant heating for the floors in the locker rooms. Special care is being given to use no/ low toxicity paints, floor coverings and cabinetry.
