What is a Green Job?
The definition of green jobs is still nebulous but slowly gaining clarity. The Oregon
Employment Department has identified a green job as one that provides a service or
creates a product in any of the following categories:
• Increasing energy efficiency;
• Producing renewable energy;
• Preventing, reducing or mitigating environmental degradation;
• Cleaning up and restoring the natural environment; or
• Providing education, consulting, policy promotion, accreditation, tradingand offsets, or similar services supporting any of the other categories.
This definition is good in that it allows for the capture of just about any environmental / clean tech field. However, it does not address wage rates. 3EStrategies believes that
as we transition toward a green economy, a true “green job” should be green as in
environment and as in cash in peoples’ pockets. In other words, we should use this
momentum toward green economic development to benefit both the environment and
workers. However, at this moment, many green industries do not pay well and have not
established clear career pathways for people to advance in skills and salaries.
